Week Nine
ICT, Writing, Art, Inquiry;
Students will continue with self directed learning activity of their choice for concentrated periods of time, focussing on the skills of asking 'thick' questions, reading for the purpose of gathering information, selecting what of their information fits within the scope of their question, designing a presentation board, designing a collection of A4 pages of images and written information, drawing the background to the information board and putting the board together. Students will also put this information board on their wikis and insert video or audio clips as part of their electronic presentation.
This is a huge task and will be a challenge for most of the students to self manage their time and effort. A time line will be provided so those conscious of moving along can ask for help if they are getting behind.
Writing:
Use ESL News NZ article 'Government buys 5000 homes in ChCh' for a guided session in note taking and listening skills. Use the questions at the end of the article as a basis for making sense of the item and inferencing. Ask for some discussion as to perceived right or wrongs of this government action.
Week Eight
Maths:
Reflection, mirror image and symmetry. Teacher Tools resources from Geometry as well FIO Geometry.
Photograph students and print out half the image - with the face cut in half on the vertical axis down the nose line. Students are to draw the other half of their face using the concept of facial symmetry.
Continue times tables maintenance work using games.
Writing & ICT: Writing to wikis continues, students to write as much as possible to their wiki, publishing existing work or creating new pieces.
Inquiry:
Students decide what they would like to study in depth for the next three weeks; Prepare a plan for a presentation board. Prepare a rubric for success criteria. Discuss student work from last year. Prepare the self critiquing sheet.
Maori:
Continue practice of body parts in preparation for test next week.
PE:
Netball skills - passing to a running target so they are able to run onto the ball.

A writing activity based on a story starter such as Henry's Surprise. One morning Henry wakes up and discovers to his horror that he has grown a third leg...
Students are to use the writing process, brainstorm, draft write, peer edit etc as well as the Y3 or Y4 Writing Rubric to self assess their writing and then they are make written comments as to what they need to do to improve to reach their goal level of writing.
Writing & ICT: Writing to wikis continues, students to write as much as possible to their wiki, publishing existing work or creating new pieces.
Reading:
Reading for mileage continues. Reading comprehension and language skills continues.
"The Kiwi Killer", read final chapters and complete comprehension activities.
Gold Readers to read "The Greatest Race on Earth" and complete questions.
Oral Language:
Students to prepare a 3 minute oral presentation that they will deliver prior to the end of the term. Their introduction to their speech will include their mihi.
Maths:
Drawing geometric shapes and labelling their components.

PE:
Touch rugby, setting out the rules and guidelines. Practice passing and running. Practice stopping and rolling ball backwards after being touched.

Write a review of a teacher read story called "Mrs Bubble's Baby" by Margaret Mahy.
Brainstorm an outline for a narrative called "What a Mess". Write at least five sentences using the brainstormed material.
Practice editing skills, use a dictionary for spelling and meaning. Reading activities:
Introduce students to the "Blue Reading Box". Test to gauge ability level and start on first activity to learn how to complete all the activities on the cards.
'Novels' group work their way through a reading strategy / comprehension activity entitled, '13 - year old scales Mt Everest'. This activity asks the students to use prediction, visualisation, ask appropriate questions and make connections to the text on 3 levels (personal or 'text to self', text to text and text to the world). Punctuation activity looking for understanding of capital letters, full stops, question marks, commas, speech marks.
Recount activity for the 'It's Cool to be Kind' show. Students to write a recount using our recount criteria as well as simple writing criteria (see attached PDF). For this exercise the students are also expected to follow the writing steps in full: brainstorm, draft writing copy, conference with partner, editing, conference with teacher, publish. Publishing for most students will be on the computers, but for some it will be handwritten.

Cutting and folding a pre-drawn cube net.
Using the language and definition of a cube - 6 sides or faces, 8 vertices, 12 edges.
Drawing another cube net, different from the first, copying it onto plain paper, cutting and folding to check that it folded into a cube.
Recheck on understanding of properties of a cube.
Draw an octohedron, copying from an example on the projector screen.
Use Yr 3 / 4 assessment activity.

Using Courtney and Jaymie as tutors - the whole class will learn how to put a photo or file on their wiki site. The image is to relate to their own question and research from last term. All students had a question to research, or a time period to research related to our timeline.
Religious Instruction: (conducted by itinerant RI teachers).
Discuss the parable of Jesus and the fisherman. Colour in a fish and hang this from the ceiling.
PE:
Middle syndicate sports afternoon is on Wednesday. A range of large ball skills are taught.

All students have a designated event to draw for a timeline that starts with the turn of the millenium with the life of Jesus Christ, Roman Britain, the start of a seedling that becomes Tane Mahuta, the discovery of NZ by Kupe, the settling of Levin, the start of Levin North School, through to the birth of the students. Each student is to draw their event and research it in order to present their information to their peers at a future date.
Week Two
Describing myself - writing activity
1) Ask the children to write a short description of themselves. These should only consist of a few sentences outlining who they are and what they like to do. They should NOT write their name in these descriptions.
2) When everyone has finished, collect in the work, and read out the descriptions to the class. Do not reveal who wrote each description.
3) While you are reading, the class should listen carefully, and try to work out who wrote each description (this can be done individually or in small groups).
4) Reveal the writers of each description, and ask the children if they were correct.
Create a list of describing words used from their 'Mum' writing and from their 'Describe myself' activity.
Topic & Art & ICT
Create a timeline - each student will contribute one A3 page to the timeline that will run across the room. The page will feature artwork created from research done on the topic of that time period. The topics are random across a timeline of events from Roman Britain through to 2004 (birthdates of the students).

Spelling activity based around spelling days of the week, months of the year and numbers.
Maths
Doubles and halves - activities using a range of activities
Find out names of families, names of birth place, occupations.
Present their findings to the class recite mihi.
